London Road

London Road the musical is written based on a real-life event of a serial killer in London Road near Ipswich. The musical is written in the verbatim style – a style of writing where the musical is constructed using the text exactly as recorded in documentaries and interviews. The ‘music’ and lyrics is dictated and mimicked mainly by the rhythm, pace and pitch of the spoken words.

London was a project launched by the National Theatre initially, however, after receiving many positive reviews, the show was taken on a national tour and later in 2015, reworked for a film adaptation which was recently broadcasted on BBC iplayer.

Sunday In The Park With George

Sunday In the Park With George is making its revival on Broadway this season after 11 years. This time starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Geroge and Annaleigh Ashford as Dot.

Sunday In The Park With George Synopsis:

Inspired by George Seurat’s magnificent painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s soaring musical is itself an artistic masterpiece. The musical begins with the story of George and his model and lover Dot. As George struggles to find his artistic voice, he becomes more and more distant from the one woman who truly sees him for who he really is. Meanwhile, the characters that inhabit George’s painting have lives unto themselves, which George captures with his paintbrush. A century later, George and Dot’s descendants, themselves struggling artists, grapple with the same issues of artistic ingenuity, and a public who just doesn’t understand.Through melodic and heartbreaking music, poetic lyrics, and quick, jaunty wit, Sunday in the Park with George reveals universal truths about the nature of art, love, and passion, with the breadth and depth of art’s most enduring masterpieces. Freaky Friday A New Musical

Freaky Friday is one of my most beloved ‘real-life’ movie by Disney. To know that a stage musical version will be produced, I am beyond excited! The story talks about a body swapping experience between a mother and daughter and how they learn to appreciate one another through the act of selfless love. The movie, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, was extremely popular and I would recommend everyone to watch it if you haven’t already watched it. Defying Gravity Cover

Famous of its vocal range, the long belt note at the end of the song whilst being suspended half way in the air when singing… Defying Gravity (from Wicked) has become one of the most iconic songs over the past decade.

However, I want to share this lovely acoustic cover of the song, sang by Rachel Tucker who played Elphaba both in London and Broadway, and Aaron Tveit, who played Fiyero a few years back on Broadway.

Honeymoon In Vegas

Honeymoon In Vegas is Jason Robert Brown’s latest musical. It first appeared as a film in 1992 following the same name.

The plot:

“Mild-mannered Brooklynite, Jack, promised his dying mother that he would never get married, but that was before he met his sweet and beautiful girlfriend, Betsy. Haunted by a fear of Mom’s retribution, Jack avoids proposing but, when he finally summons the nerve to whisk oh-so-patient Betsy off to Las Vegas to get hitched, a dashing gambler named Tommy threatens to sweep his fiancée away to a life of luxury in Hawaii. Realising what he’s about to lose, Jack is determined to do anything to give his love story a happy ending. It all adds up to an action-packed honeymoon that no one will ever forget!” (MTI)

The music follows the older/golden-age classic big band style. I’ve included the soundtrack below, however, if you prefer to purchase the album, you can buy the album from iTunes here or listen to it on Spotify here.

More to Dear Evan Hansen

Check out the latest release of another song from the musical Dear Evan Hansen… What a lovely song 🙂

Bring It On

It’s no secret that over the past two years, there’s been a massive hype over Hamilton the musical. However, some of you may not realise that Lin-Manuel Miranda also co-wrote the music and lyrics to Bring It On The Musical. Now that you know this, you might just be able to hear his style of writing in this musical. Don’t some moments just reminds you of In The Heights and Hamilton?

Most of the characters in the musical are high school students, which means the songs such as Killer Instinct and One Perfect Moment are very suitable for a lot of MT students to sing in their early 20s, and they are often popular choices amongst girls.

Check out the following clips and playlist if you are not familiar with the show, but if you are, you may still find it interesting to take a look at the performance from the 2013 Tony Awards Ceremony and the recording session of one of the songs in the videos below.

Enjoy 🙂
