Sunday In the Park With George is making its revival on Broadway this season after 11 years. This time starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Geroge and Annaleigh Ashford as Dot.
Sunday In The Park With George Synopsis:
Inspired by George Seurat’s magnificent painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s soaring musical is itself an artistic masterpiece. The musical begins with the story of George and his model and lover Dot. As George struggles to find his artistic voice, he becomes more and more distant from the one woman who truly sees him for who he really is. Meanwhile, the characters that inhabit George’s painting have lives unto themselves, which George captures with his paintbrush. A century later, George and Dot’s descendants, themselves struggling artists, grapple with the same issues of artistic ingenuity, and a public who just doesn’t understand.Through melodic and heartbreaking music, poetic lyrics, and quick, jaunty wit, Sunday in the Park with George reveals universal truths about the nature of art, love, and passion, with the breadth and depth of art’s most enduring masterpieces. Those of you who are my students will hear me say this, one of the main things I constantly say is “everything is about PROCESS!” As soon as we start looking/working for results, then you haven’t learnt and chances are, you will get it wrong, and that’s when you become unreliable as a performer.
Joyce Didonato, one of my favourite opera singers, has once again made a very important point. Although this is an opera masterclass, the main principle remains the same in all art form.
The aria performed here is Donde Lieta from Puccini’s La Boheme. Puccini’s arias are Continue reading
Freaky Friday is one of my most beloved ‘real-life’ movie by Disney. To know that a stage musical version will be produced, I am beyond excited! The story talks about a body swapping experience between a mother and daughter and how they learn to appreciate one another through the act of selfless love. The movie, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, was extremely popular and I would recommend everyone to watch it if you haven’t already watched it. Continue reading
Over the past decade, there is a growing trend/phenomenon in acapella groups/singing with Pentatonix being one of the most successful groups to date.
Nevertheless, this acapella group – Voiceplay made a number of medley videos, but below is a rendition of their top 10 Broadway medley. Partly because it’s just cool to watch, but I also hope this put a smile on your face too 🙂
Well, this is definitely a new highlight on Broadway this year.
Sunday In The Park With George is one of Sondheim’s most famous works, and this time, it will star Jake Gyllenhaal as the lead – George.
Check out his rendition of Finishing The Hat and see what you think 🙂
Honeymoon In Vegas is Jason Robert Brown’s latest musical. It first appeared as a film in 1992 following the same name.
“Mild-mannered Brooklynite, Jack, promised his dying mother that he would never get married, but that was before he met his sweet and beautiful girlfriend, Betsy. Haunted by a fear of Mom’s retribution, Jack avoids proposing but, when he finally summons the nerve to whisk oh-so-patient Betsy off to Las Vegas to get hitched, a dashing gambler named Tommy threatens to sweep his fiancée away to a life of luxury in Hawaii. Realising what he’s about to lose, Jack is determined to do anything to give his love story a happy ending. It all adds up to an action-packed honeymoon that no one will ever forget!” (MTI)
The music follows the older/golden-age classic big band style. I’ve included the soundtrack below, however, if you prefer to purchase the album, you can buy the album from iTunes here or listen to it on Spotify here.
